Datasheets say “8P8C,” catalogs say “RJ45,” and installers say “the network jack.” Are they the same thing? The short answer
For any practical purpose, 8P8C and RJ45 describe the same connector: the 8-position, 8-contact modular jack used for Ethernet. 8P8C (“8 Position 8 Contact”) is the precise engineering name, standardized in IEC 60603-7. RJ45 is the common name the networking industry uses for that jack. The only nuance is historical: “RJ45” originally referred to a telephone wiring registration, not the Ethernet connector — but the label stuck, and today the two terms are used interchangeably. When you buy an “RJ45 jack” from VOOHU, you are buying an 8P8C modular socket; VOOHU's own product page describes it as an “8P8C network jack.”

Why “RJ45” is technically the wrong name (but everyone uses it)
“RJ” stands for Registered Jack, a series of standardized telephone interfaces defined under the US Universal Service Order Codes (USOC). An RJ code specifies wiring and function, not just a connector shape. The original RJ45S was a keyed, single-line data jack that used a programming resistor — it had a little plastic key that the ordinary 8P8C Ethernet plug does not, so an Ethernet plug would not even seat in a true RJ45S.
When structured-cabling systems adopted the 8-position modular jack in the 1980s–1990s, the “RJ45” label came along informally and never left. So the connector on your switch, wall plate, or PCB is really an 8P8C modular jack; “RJ45” is the name we all say. This is why careful datasheets and standards documents write 8P8C, while marketing, retail, and installers write RJ45. Both point to the same part.

Since the 8P8C-versus-RJ45 distinction is only a naming one, here is what genuinely separates one Ethernet jack from another — the things worth putting on your BOM:
Category & bandwidth

Shielding

Common mistakes
The 8P8C/RJ45 mix-up is harmless by itself, but the assumptions around it cause real errors:
- Thinking “RJ45” guarantees a category. The name says nothing about Cat5e vs Cat6A. Always specify the category and bandwidth you need.
- Assuming every 8-position jack is keyed like RJ45S. Standard Ethernet 8P8C jacks are un-keyed; the historical RJ45S key is not present on normal network jacks.
- Confusing 8P8C with 8P4C or 6P. A jack can have 8 positions but fewer loaded contacts. For Gigabit and PoE you need all eight contacts populated.
- Forgetting magnetics. An 8P8C jack alone is not an Ethernet front end — add a discrete transformer or use an integrated magjack.
